What Do You Know About Accordion Shutters?
You may have heard of them, if you live in an area that sees hurricanes, along with panels and impact glass and other such things. And as climate change continues to impact the world, hurricanes seem to be getting more intense, with Category 5 hurricanes becoming more likely. Even if you have not had problems with hurricane damage in the past, as you live further inland, the hurricanes are lasting longer and doing more damage, and you may now have to start thinking about problems like this. So you've probably been thinking about all the ways you can prevent damage to your home during those intense storms, including accordion storm shutters.
What do you know about them, though, other than "they exist"?
As their name implies, they accordion out of the side of the installed frame, running along tracks and generally lock shut. Many have extra safety features — heavier gauge aluminum, locking bars — as well as extra quality of life features, like transparent sections to let in light (in case you lose power and need natural light in your home or just want to keep an eye on things outside in general). They mostly come in shades like white, ivory or off white, beige, and brown or bronze — though as they get more popular, likely more options will be available.
They tend to be a fairly inexpensive solution to protecting your windows from storms. Even after installation fees, they are a more budget-friendly option — and you can always opt to DIY them if you're the handy type.
The other advantage that they offer is that they're fast and simple to use. Even if you have a lot of windows, you can generally shut a whole house down and have it protected in relatively little time, making that much less of a chore than it might have been in the past. Many types of accordion shutters will allow you to replace or upgrade the lock if you're worried about the security of your home, especially if you're not planning on sheltering in place or are under an evacuation order.
There are lots of options you have for protecting your home from hurricane damage; this is merely one. But with it being relatively inexpensive, as well as simple and effective to use, it's worth doing more research to find out if accordion storm shutters are the right solution to protect your home.
