Eco-Friendly Bath Care Tips

Are you hoping to green your beauty routine, but you still want to make sure matters of hygiene and self care are maintained? If so, there are several options you can exercise to make your time in the shower a bit more environmentally friendly. The following guide can help.

#1: Ditch the disposable razor

Disposable razors are typically made of non-recyclable plastic, which is simply tossed into the garbage after a few uses. A step up is to choose razor with a replaceable blade cartridge. Although not completely eco-friendly, it does result in a little less waste. If you want to avoid nearly all waste, then go with an old fashioned razor that uses straight blades. The handles are metal and reusable, and each blade is double sided. When you are done with a blade, it can be recycled where steel is accepted.

#2: Read labels

Many people avoid bath and beauty products that are tested on animals, but there is another issue with some products – palm oil. The harvesting of palm oil isn't always done in a sustainable manner, and it is leading to an eco crisis in some areas. Fortunately, the beauty industry is often at the forefront of self-labeling and self-regulation. Just like most products carry labels to let you know if they use animal testing, many companies have now adopted standards to indicate whether they are palm-oil-free or using sustainable palm oil. Read the label and the ingredient list to be sure.

#3: Cut down on packaging

Packaging is another big eco-killer in the shower. You can get rid of nearly all packaging by switching from body wash to bar soap, and from shampoo and conditioner to a hair care bar. Of course, these products aren't for everyone. The next best option is to see if any bulk stores or beauty supply stores carry your favorite products in bulk. Buying the largest package possible or simply refilling your own container cuts down on waste. Failing this, then opt for products that are sold in recyclable bottles so at least you can ensure they are reused.

Environmentally responsible beauty in the bathroom isn't about giving up your favorite bath and body care products, but about adapting the products you use to make more responsible choices. The beauty and self care industry is often working toward similar goals, so it is becoming easier to find sustainable bath products.
